As of yesterday February 11, 2010 I have survived living in Spain for an entire month. I am absolutely enjoying every minute that I am here. I love the small, centered town of Alcala. It may not be on the beach or in the fast-paced settings such as other larger cities in Spain. I feel it is the place where I am supposed to be for this experience if one can understand that...The Spanish people are wonderful people. They love life, and I admire their closeness to their families, which is something that is lacking in many places-the importance of the family. Even though I am not a part of my host family's family by blood, I certainly feel like I am a part of their family, and I feel like I will forever have a second family here in Alcala de Henares. I already can see changes in my Spanish speaking abilities. I do need to, however, challenge myself to not speak as much English around the other students. My host family is wonderful, and I am blessed to be placed in such a warm house. My host mom is a wonderful spirit, she cooks the best food for me, and she makes sure that I am always doing ok. So far since I have been here I have visited the cities of Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, and El Escorial. Each of these places have been absolutely beautiful and magical in their own way. Let's see, I bought my self some white pants, a knife from Toledo, started Spanish dance classes (which are a blast), been salsa dancing, I meet weekly with Spanish locals to engage in conversation with Spanish and English and we have even had the opportunity to go out with them, definitely have taken advantage of the Spanish siestas, and life is just beautiful. I thoroughly enjoy watching the people on the streets, old and young, walk up and down the cobble stone streets with happiness in their eyes. I am excited for this weekend which is Carnaval a country-wide celebration before Lent where everyone dresses up, there are fiestas and tons of people on the streets. I am also excited to see where the next month will take me and what new and exciting things I will see. Life is beautiful. Viva Espana!
